Fashion is more than a model posing for a camera. Fashion is art, fashion is a way of conveying a message about ourselves, through clothing.
Below is two images which pathed the way of fashion photography. Each telling a story behind the lens.
Richard Avedon -Dovima with elephants (1955)
Taken by Avedon at the Cirque d'hiver in Paris. The symmetry between the model and the elephants is divine. The contrast of the rough elephant skin and the smooth fabric with a clean elegant model, alongside dirty elephants. Yet both convey a force in great power.
Published in Harper Bazaar, this negative no longer exists. Its still a mystery till this day.
Nick Knight -Tatjana Patitiz for Jil Sanders (1992)
I remember seeing this photograph when I was 12 years old and it was on the cover of a fashion illustration book. I was drawn to this book across the room as the image captured my imagination.
As I look at the image now in conveys mystery, femineity and sheer artistry. It was beautifully composed and is enchanting. A story behind the image of a young blossoming stardom.
